Hump brake shoe BTG-1 is used for braking and preventing uncontrolled movement of railway rolling stock on sloped sections. The brake shoe is installed under the wheels of the rolling stock on the rolling surface of the rail head towards the moving wagon or group of wagons. The wheel rolls onto the shoe, rests against the stop and stops moving, but the translational force causes the brake shoe to slide along the rail, while the wheel does not get holes.
It is an subject of mandatory strict accounting. It is designed for outdoor operation in temperate climates (version "U") placement category I according to GOST 15150-69 at temperatures from -50 to +45 at 100% humidity. The brake hump shoe is used on hump yards and semi-hills, foothill tracks and shunting lines. It can also be used as a fixing shoe when arranging trains on hills during the automatic shunting or as a means of adjusting the speed of rolling stock at stations without automatic retarders.
According to the Rules for the technical operation of railways in the Russian Federation, trains shall have brake shoes in the amount of four pieces for their installation under the wheels of the train during the haul.
