Introduction of digital automatic couplings
China Railway Nanning Group Co. and CRRC have jointly put into operation a digital automatic coupling system for multiple-traction electric locomotives. The innovation is enabled on 148 HXD1C locomotives (with close-range wireless double-heading system) that have been manufactured since 2009.
Digital automatic couplings provide automatic connection/disconnection of train cars and transmission of electrical power, pneumatic pressure, and data. The solution provides transportation digitization functions, including telematics, remote diagnostics, train management, and integration with other modes of transport.
Previously, a coupling of electric locomotives on the Nanning-Kunming route, which is rather challenging due to considerable gradients, was carried out manually. With the introduction of the digital system, the coupling process has been quickened to take five seconds, which greatly simplifies and speeds up the operation.
Digital automatic couplings are expected to increase the efficiency of freight transportation by speeding up technological processes, improving safety and reducing downtime. This is a big step towards comprehensive digitization of the entire railway industry.
