Automated monitoring system
The rail infrastructure is regularly exposed to risks and threats, including unauthorized criminal access to facilities for the purposes of equipment theft, or terrorist attacks. Risks also include natural and man-made hazards.
Traditional security control methods, like patrolling and video surveillance, often turn out to be ineffective due to limited resources, vast areas to be surveyed and human error.
For that purpose, the Donetsk Railway Transport Institute started development of an automated, high-performance microchips-based railway infrastructure monitoring system equipped with video cameras and a smart image analysis algorithm.
The purpose of this system is to early detect potential threats like unauthorized access, theft or incidents, including those taking place at railway crossings. The new system uses high-performance microchips with neural processing units and trained neural networks onboard capable of detecting and classifying objects, as well as analyzing their behavior. Test results have confirmed that the system is highly effective in real operational conditions, improving safety and security of railway transport.
