Unmanned Train Operation
The sphere of unmanned operation of metro trains and trams is actively developing in Russia. Related pilot projects are considered one of the key steps in digitalizing urban rail transport and enhancing its operational efficiency.
Industry experts note that the introduction of unmanned trains will significantly improve schedule accuracy, minimize human errors and make energy consumption more efficient. The automated control systems ensure smooth acceleration and braking, uninterrupted speed control, and continuous technical monitoring of both rolling stock and infrastructure.
On January 16, 2026, the Aminyevskoye train depot hosted a presentation of the first unmanned metro train in Russia Moscow-2026, The train uses Russia-made software and is fully prepared for operation in the Moscow metro. In the first stage, in order to obtain standard certificates, the train will operate without passengers and with a driver at night and outside of the schedule. The full-scail launch of the train is expected as early as 2027, and by 2030 the entire metro line will operate in unmanned mode.
The presentation also showcased an unmanned tram; such trams are already used to transport passengers. It is expected that by 2030 two-thirds of the capital’s tram fleet will consist of such unmanned trams.
